Marty's (Main) Room
*** NOTICE ***: Due to a fire in Marty's (Main) Book Room on the morning of August 9 there will be no sale in this room until further notice. The Main Sale for October will be held in the patio area outside the Mitchell Park Library in Cubberley Building O (auditorium) on the southeast corner of the campus, basically opposite Marty's Room. (See sale map)

There will be NO EARLY ENTRY NUMBERS issued for this sale.

Children's Book Sale
The Children's Room has moved to the portable formerly occupied by the Jewish Community Center next to the soccer field. It is entirely filled with children's books and toys. You'll find picture books, school age fiction and non-fiction, award winners, non-English titles, CDs and DVDs, and books for parents and teachers, most for 50 cents or $1. This room and the Bargain Room open at 10 am on Saturday. Strollers are welcome in the Children's Room at any time.

Bargain Books in K-7
The Bargain Room is located in Rooms K-7 and K-6 of the Cubberley main campus, right next to the tennis courts. Paperbacks are 50 cents, hardcovers are $1, and children's books are just 25 cents each. The room also contains many LP records and 78s at $1 each. On Sunday, the room opens at 11 am and all prices are half off. Save even more on Sundays by buying grocery bags from us for $5 each and stuffing them with any items in the room. Buy 4 bags and get the 5th one FREE!

Temporary Library Open at Cubberley
The Mitchell Park and Downtown library operations have been moved to the Cubberley Community Center Auditorium (Building O) and are now open and will remain open while the new Mitchell Park Library/Youth Center is built, and the Downtown Library is renovated. Now you can visit the library and our book sales all in one stop!

The main book sale will be held in the patio area outside the Library for this month. (See sale map)

Non-Profit Book Giveaway
Non-profit organizations, schools and teachers that need FREE books should come to the Bargain Room this month from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday, October 10. Please bring your own grocery bags to put books into. More information.

Suggestions?
We're always eager to hear your suggestions for ways to improve our book sale. Please email them to us at suggestions@friendspaloaltolib.org or mention them to a volunteer at the sale.

October Sale Notes

Our Main Room is still closed due to the August 9 fire. The building that we were in will be completely replaced; we have a tentative target to be in back in there in time for the November Sale. This will be a relief to our dedicated volunteers who have been working under less-than-ideal conditions for the past two months to keep the book process flowing.

We will once again have our sale in the patio area outside of the new temporary Mitchell Park Library in Building O (see map link below). Bargain Room and Children's Room are open as normal, and we'll be accepting donations and selling Ephemera outside of the 'old' Main Room...The books will be arranged on tables. Our normal sale policies still apply:

  • 12 book buying limit for the first hour or until the Sale Manager removes the limit (you may re-enter the sale as many times as you wish).
  • No hoarding or stacking of books allowed (any unattended books will be returned to the sale).
  • Aggressive behavior will not be tolerated.
  • Scanning is allowed "in place" only - please help keep our sale orderly.
  • We reserve the right to eject from the sale anyone who does not comply with our policies.

Preview Our Shelves

Click here to see some of the shelves at this weekend's sale Check out some of the thousands of books that will be on sale this weekend using our shelf preview pictures.

Be sure to check back late Friday afternoon and evening, we will be photographing and updating as we get the main sale books out of storage and out on the tables.

Smoke Damaged Inventory "Fire Sale"
Some of the inventory that was in the Main Room during the fire will be for sale in the Tennis Court area next to Marty's (Main) Room. All of the books were exposed to smoke and will have some trace of "smoky" smell to them. There are various techniques that can be done to remove the smell if desired. The books are sold "as-is". Pricing will be 1/2 of the price marked when prepared for the August Sale (marked in the usual spot on the first page). This sale will start at 9am. In the unlikely event of rain this sale will be cancelled.

Library Patio Sale A Success!
The September Sale went better than we had hoped despite having far fewer than the normal amount of books as one of our "normal" sales. We would like to thank all of you who came to the sale for your support. Children's Room and Bargain Room also boasted strong sales. The Library reported that borrowing activity was up for the weekend. We hope you'll come out again this month as we have a whole new bunch of books for sale.

We're Still Accepting Donations!
Donations are still being accepted in front of the 'old' Main Room. There is usually a volunteer attending to the donation station every afternoon or you may leave your donations on or behind the table. Receipts are available on the table if no volunteer is present. We'll also arrange pickup of large donations or if you are unable to bring your books to us.

Bargain Room Bag Sale on Sunday
On Sunday the Bargain Room features a "bag sale". For $5.00 you purchase a large shopping bag from our cashier and then you can fill it up with anything inside the Bargain Room. We encourage creative bag packing to maximize value. For every 4 bags you buy, you get an additional bag FREE! If you don't want to buy a whole bag, all items are 50% off our Saturday prices - so hardback books and media are only 50 cents, softcover books only 25 cents.

One-Liners
The Annual Members-Early Sale has been set for Saturday, November 13. Due to the fire, the location may change. Details will be published in future newsletters and will also be available on the web site.... The next "Better Book Bonanza" will also be in November. Don't miss it!.... Remember, we do accept donations during the sale - drop off a few and pick up some new ones.... If you sell on eBay you can donate a portion of your sale to FOPAL! We're now listed as one of the charities under "eBay Giving Works". Please contact us if you need more information.

Think Ecologically! - Bring or Donate Your Own Bags

Due to the increasing reuse of grocery and other bags, we tend to run short at our sales and encourage you to bring your own cloth tote or paper bags to the sale. If you have any extra grocery bags in good condition please bring them for your purchases at the sale. We would also gladly accept any extra bags you wish to donate.

Support Palo Alto's Libraries While You Shop
By shopping at Kepler's Books in Menlo Park and Amazon.com, a percentage of your purchase price can help the Palo Alto Libraries at no cost to you. At Kepler's, just mention to the cashier that you want to support the Friends of the Palo Alto Library. For Amazon.com, always start your shopping session by clicking here or on the Amazon link on the top right of any of our web pages at www.friendspaloaltolib.org. Virtually all purchases you make at Amazon are eligible, not just books. Over the years, we've raised thousands of dollars to help our libraries through these programs.
