ALL PROCEEDS GO TO HELP PALO ALTO LIBRARIES

Marty's (Main) Book Room
In our Main Room, prices are way below what used book stores charge. Paperbacks are 50 cents and up, and hardcovers are $1 and up.

Due to the popularity of our sale and the fact that we can only have 185 customers in the room at any time a numbered ticket system (Main Room only) is in place and numbers are given out beginning at 8am on Saturday. Be sure to be in line in order of your number before the 11am opening. If you miss the time when your number is allowed to enter the Main Room you will forfeit your place in line. NOTE: If you plan on arriving to the sale after 11am you do NOT need to get a number.

Please note that due to crowding during the first two hours of the Book Sale, no strollers, rolling carts, etc. can be brought into the Main Room. This is for the safety of shoppers and volunteers alike. By 12:30 or so, the crowd thins out and shoppers are welcome to bring these items into the sale.

Children's Book Sale in New Location
The Children's Room has moved to the portable formerly occupied by the Jewish Community Center next to the soccer field. It is entirely filled with children's books and toys. You'll find picture books, school age fiction and non-fiction, award winners, non-English titles, and books for parents and teachers, most for 50 cents or $1. This room and the Bargain Room open at 10 am on Saturday. Strollers are welcome in the Children's Room at any time.

Bargain Books in K-7
The Bargain Room is located in Rooms K 6-7 of the Cubberley main campus, right next to the tennis courts. Paperbacks are 50 cents, hardcovers are $1, and children's books are just 25 cents each. The room also contains many LP records and 78s at $1 each. On Sunday, the room opens at 11 am and all prices are half off. Save even more on Sundays by buying grocery bags from us for $5 each and stuffing them with any items in the room. Buy 4 bags and get the 5th one FREE!

Temporary Library Now Open at Cubberley
The Mitchell Park and Downtown library operations have been moved to the Cubberley Community Center Auditorium and are now open and will remain open while the new Mitchell Park Library/Youth Center is built, and the Downtown Library is renovated. Now you can visit the library and our booksales all in one stop!

Non-Profit Book Giveaway
Non-profit organizations, schools and teachers that need FREE books should come to the Bargain Room this month from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday, July 11. Please bring your own grocery bags to put books into. More information.

Suggestions?

July Sale Highlights

A strong month for donations with lots of quality. Highlights...Our History section manager reports a nice selection of books on Historiography. No idea what that means but she said if you're interested, you'll know.... Former Apple software evangelist Guy Kawasaki donated a wonderful lot of business books, some he's written as well as many others, including many recent titles (some inscribed to him). You'll find these in the White Specials case inside the entrance door as well as in the Business section.... The last round of DVD Movies from the huge donation we received two months ago is offered. Not as many as the past two months but there will be a lot of new titles available and most of these are in superb condition.... An online dealer recently donated a large amount of "For Dummies" titles, most in like new condition, mostly Computer titles but you'll find the familiar black and yellow covers all over the Book Room on Sale Day.... Buddhism is prominently represented with three shelves of books and magazines in the Religion Section.... A late rush of Science Fiction book donations meant an overflow for our section manager there, so she's expanded to the new set of shelves across from the normal Sci-Fi and Fantasy section.... Ever heard of the genre Paranormal Romance? Then you'll find those shelved on the West Wall between Fiction and Law.... Popular Science is well represented again this month with a new and eclectic assortment of subjects... Our Home & Crafts manager reports a nice selection of Fine Homebuilding and Fine Woodworking magazines as well as not-often-seen Selvedge Magazine from the UK.... The CD shelves have been restocked this month in Music.... Don't forget, if you come early we have a Tent Sale (weather permitting) right outside the Main Room entrance. It opens at 9am and everything there is only $1.00 each!

VHS Tapes and Books on Tape Now Exclusively in Bargain Room
We have moved all VHS Tapes and Books on Cassette Tape permanently to the Bargain Room. Books on CD will still be sold in the Main Room first. We get hundreds of VHS movies every month so a great selection is assured. We still have many nice Books on Tape from the Library donation. All are priced at $1.00 each.

Exceptional/Collectible Books Sale Update
In AUGUST we will have a special High Value and Collectibles Sale in our new building which we call "The Annex". The front of the building contains our wonderful new Children's Room, the HV & C Sale will be held in a room in the back, using the side entrance to the building. More details will follow in next month's newsletter.

Some Policy Changes Now and Forthcoming
There will be two changes in place for the numbering system for Early Birds. Every number ticket will be coded with a different color each month. It has become obvious that many are abusing our "two ticket" policy and simply saving numbers for the following month or using the extra ticket to jump to the front of the line after having been through the sale once already. In addition, if you are not in line when your number is allowed through the door your number is expired. You will not be allowed to jump the line if you come late.

Despite our best efforts, a small minority of our customers are taking advantage of our current policies to serve their own self-interests. An even smaller minority are outright stealing from us. In order to protect our interests we are considering several changes to current policies some of which will be instituted for the August Sale. We reserve the right to remove any person from the sale who does not abide by our policies. In addition any person caught shoplifting or erasing/removing price stickers will be reported to local law enforcement. We apologize to our many wonderful regular customers for any inconveniences, which we will try to keep to a minimum.

Sunday! Sunday! - Mystery 50% Off Sale; Free Books for Sunday Shoppers
Sundays are a great time to shop the Book Sale. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful and there are still thousands of great books available. Each Sunday we have a 50% off sale on one category of books in the Main Room. The category will not be announced ahead of time, the only way you can find out which category is on sale is by attending the sale on Sunday. Signs will be posted on the doors and on the shelves of the section involved on the morning of the Sale. In addition, we will have a small selection of FREE books available to shoppers on Sunday. One free book per person, and you must purchase at least one item from the Sale. There are a limited number of free books and first-come, first-served. This applies to the Main Room only. Doors open at 11 am.

One-Liners
The Annual Members-Early Sale has been set for Saturday, November 13. Details will be published in future newsletters and will also be available on the web site.... The Bargain Room is once again filled to capacity and beyond.... Remember, we do accept donations during the sale - drop off a few and pick up some new ones.... Binders and boxes are always available for free outside the Main Room door.... Coming Soon - sell your stuff on eBay and donate a portion of the proceeds to FOPAL!

Think Ecologically! - Bring or Donate Your Own Bags

Due to the increasing reuse of grocery and other bags, we tend to run short at our sales and encourage you to bring your own cloth tote or paper bags to the sale. If you have any extra grocery bags in good condition please bring them for your purchases at the sale. We would also gladly accept any extra bags you wish to donate. NO BOXES are allowed in the sale, however.

Support Palo Alto's Libraries While You Shop
By shopping at Kepler's Books in Menlo Park and Amazon.com, a percentage of your purchase price can help the Palo Alto Libraries at no cost to you. At Kepler's, just mention to the cashier that you want to support the Friends of the Palo Alto Library. For Amazon.com, always start your shopping session by clicking here or on the Amazon link on the top right of any of our web pages at www.friendspaloaltolib.org. Virtually all purchases you make at Amazon are eligible, not just books. Over the years, we've raised thousands of dollars to help our libraries through these programs.
